Betlem gets its name from the homonymous hermitage from the 19th century that has made this beautiful place so famous. La Ermita de Betlem is the protagonist of many of the excursions that are made on the island and in which, until 2010, hermits lived. Inside it preserves recognized works, such as those of the sculptor Adriá Ferrán or the painter Manuel Bayeu.

A few meters from the hermitage, there is Na Bernadeta fountain that provides water to the hermitage and a 19th century mill located in its vicinity.

But Betlem is also known as Cales de Betlem for the quiet coves that border the town, with beached boats and a deep rocky bottom.

This sea coast was the habitat of the monk seal, –vellmarí in Catalan–. Es Vellmarins Alts and Es Vellsmarins Baixos are two underwater caves in which these marine mammals lived. In the section that goes from Capdepera to Artà, the last specimens of this species were captured in waters of Mallorca.
